Penguins beat Columbus in shootout, 4-3

The Penguins rallied from a two-goal deficit in the final three minutes of regulation en route to a 4-3 shootout victory against Columbus at Nationwide Arena tonight.

The Penguins are 11-2 and will face Minnesota Saturday at 7:38 p.m. at Mellon Arena.

Penguins goalie Brent Johnson stopped Antoine Vermette, Rick Nash and Kristian Huselius during the shootout; Columbus goalie Steve Mason denied Kris Letang, but could not stop Sidney Crosby.

Nash, the Blue Jackets’ all-star winger, got the only goal of the opening period, as he swatted a rebound past Johnson while on his knees in front of the crease.

Nash got his goal during a power play at 18:13, while Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik was serving a slashing minor.

Nash struck again at 5:37 of the second, taking a feed from Antoine Vermette and beating Johnson from low in the right circle for his eighth of the season.

Crosby lifts Pens past Blue Jackets in shootout

Pittsburgh scored twice in the final 3 minutes of regulation to tie it and Sidney Crosby had the only goal in the shootout to lead the Penguins to a 4-3 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday night.
Brent Johnson stopped 29 shots before the shootout, then stymied Antoine Vermette, Rick Nash and Kristian Huselius in the tiebreaker. The Penguins improved to 6-0-0 on the road, the franchise’s best start ever away from home.
Ruslan Fedotenko and Alex Goligoski scored late goals in a 39-second span to tie it. Chris Kunitz also had a short-handed goal and an assist. Crosby added two assists.
Nash had two goals — one while on his knees — and Derek Dorsett his first of the season for the Blue Jackets, who lost their third in a row.

Superstar unveils fibre-ful eating

Thanks to Brianne for sending this to me!

THE HAMILTON SPECTATOR
(Oct 29, 2009)
Hockey superstar Sidney Crosby is unveiling what’s under his jersey to encourage Canadians to eat more fibre.

The 2009 Stanley Cup champion is backing a campaign by Kellogg Canada by donning a one-of-a-kind, hand-painted second skin to raise awareness of fibre’s body benefits after learning that Canadians are not making the grade when it comes to fibre consumption.

In a recent survey commissioned by Kellogg, only 16 per cent of Canadians say they consume the recommended daily fibre intake of 25 grams of fibre per day, while a staggering 60 per cent didn’t know how many grams they consume daily.

“As an athlete, I know how important it is to eat well and get this powerhouse nutrient in your diet regardless of your age or your fitness levels,” said the native of Cole Harbour, N.S.

“Fibre benefits far more than some may think: your heart, your digestive system, your weight, and your energy levels.

“It’s hard to believe that something as simple as eating fibre can help your body in so many ways, yet we’re not getting enough.”

Studies show fibre also helps promote regularity, promotes weight-loss by keeping you feeling full and satisfied, contributes to healthy cholesterol levels and may also help protect against cancer.

The Crosby Hat Trick

Sidney Crosby’s line was the only one coach Dan Bylsma kept intact for the Penguins’ game against Montreal at Mellon Arena last night.

It practically was the only he had to use, too.

Oh, it’s not that Crosby and his wingers, Chris Kunitz and Bill Guerin, were the only ones to contribute to the Penguins’ 6-1 victory over the Canadiens.

Fact is, just about every Penguins who stepped onto the ice chipped in with something significant.

Crosby’s hat trick sparks 6-1 rout

Sidney Crosby got his third career hat trick and linemate Chris Kunitz had four points as the Penguins beat the Montreal Canadiens, 6-1, tonight at Mellon Arena to improve to 10-2.

The Penguins, who finished their homestand 4-1, avoided losing two games in a row for the first time this season and halted Montreal’s winning streak at four games.

The Penguins got the only goal of the first period from their top line.

Sidney Crosby to carry Olympic torch in Nova Scotia next month

Canadian hockey star Sidney Crosby will carry the Olympic torch in his home province of Nova Scotia next month.
The Pittsburgh Penguins captain is slated to run in the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay on Nov. 18 in Halifax.
“I am honoured and thrilled to have the opportunity to carry the Olympic flame in my home province of Nova Scotia,” the Cole Harbour, N.S., native said in a release. “The torch relay will pass through so many communities and hands on the way to Vancouver and I’m privileged to be part of that special group as the Olympic Flame makes its way to Vancouver for the 2010 Winter Games.”
Other athletes slated to carry the torch so far include former Vancouver Canucks captain Trevor Linden, NBA star Steve Nash from Victoria and Calgary golfer Stephen Ames.
The torch relay begins its trek in Victoria on Friday. Over 106 days, it will make stops in every province and territory leading up to the lighting of the cauldron at BC Place.
The Games will be held from Feb. 12 to 28 in Vancouver and Whistler, B.C., followed by the Paralympics from March 12 to 21.
